Critic Reviews for Diablo 3 - Rise of the Necromancer
When the bones hit the dirt, I'd rank the Necromancer highly in terms of sheer fun factor and uniqueness when compared to Diablo 3's other classes. I do feel like $15 might be a bit much to simply unlock a new class, especially when so much of the new stuff in this patch (like some new areas for adventure mode) is being released for free. If it's within your budget, though, I don't think you'll be disappointed with the new playstyles and crazy strategies Rise of the Necromancer brings to Sanctuary.
The Rise of the Necromancer DLC offers a great new character class for Diablo III--but is it enough to keep the five-year-old game afloat?
The Necromancer has returned with a well-composed concoction of nostalgic skills and modern design. It's a flashy addition to an already strong roster of classes in Diablo 3 that, while held back by two minor missteps, deserves the attention of Diablo veterans and new players alike.
It's bittersweet to get the culmination of good role design in a pricey DLC. I'm the kind of person who maxed out every single character in two weeks of Diablo III's launch, then moved into Inferno and Hardcore runs -- also known as the target audience for a character drop. Every time I boot up D3, whether it's for a new season or a new group of friends, I have the option to level up a new Necromancer, and that's going to be invaluable down the line for me. But for everyone else who only dabbles in dungeon crawling, wait for a sale.
The real star of the show for Diablo III in 2017 is patch 2.6.0. The Necromancer is an expensive luxury for those that really want to have everything that the game offers.
With a few new zones and bounties, there's more to tackle beyond the new class and Challenge Rift. With luck, and the upcoming Season 11, there's plenty of reasons to come back to Diablo III. The Necromancer is a bit of a work in progress currently, but it's a fantastic addition that fits nicely into the pantheon of fighters and casters.
I would've liked to have seen a little more story content, even if it was just some additional lore, but that's a personal gripe. Most players will probably be too busy relishing the bloody carnage the Necromancer can bring, which is considerable. This is a great addition to Diablo III, one I highly recommend to fans of all of Diablo's existing classes.
Diablo III is an amazing RPG to begin with, and I think that the Necromancer adds some enjoyment out of it all. Hardcore players of Diablo III and those looking for a reason to go back to New Tristram should most certainly pick this DLC up. For the casual player, maybe wait for a price drop a bit. Even then, just know, you're getting a new class and that's about it. Granted, that class is just as fun to play as the rest of them.
