God of War 2021 is officially God of War 2022. Sony revealed the news in a blog post Q&A today just before Sony Santa Monica put out a statement to make it extra official.
Since the release of the next God of War teaser last year, we've been humbled by the amount of love our community has shown us. We're incredibly grateful to see so many people excited to experience the next chapter of Kratos and Atreus' journey.
We remain focused on delivering a top-quality game while maintaining the safety and wellbeing of our team, creative partners, and families. With this in mind, we've made the decision to shift our release window to 2022.
Thank you for all your continued support, we've got some exciting things in the works we can't wait to show you!

On the PlayStation Blog, Sony's Herman Hulst also confirmed that the next God of War, often rumored to be called God of War Ragnarok, will be cross-gen on PS5 and PS4, like Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7. Hulst noted that the PlayStation Studios family has 25 in-development games right now, with more than half of those being new IP.
As for the PC landscape, Hulst reiterated that PlayStation consoles will remain necessary for those seeking to play Sony's first-party games at launch. "But we do value PC gamers, and we’ll continue to look at the right times to launch each game. Bend Studio just released the PC version of Days Gone on May 18. So that’s about two years after the PS4 release.
"And I hope that a new set of fans can and will enjoy that title. And that’s the goal — we want to reach new gamers who haven’t yet experienced the great stories, characters, and worlds that we’ve built. Releasing games on PC will not come ever at the expense of building an exciting lineup of great console games."
The God of War sequel's 2021 launch window was always viewed with great skepticism by seemingly everyone in the gaming world, perhaps even at Sony. It's a wonder why the team ever revealed such a date. Horizon, meanwhile, is still targeting a holiday 2021 release, but we'll again have to keep our expectations in check for that.
