Capcom's spin-off of the Monster Hunter series makes for a surprisingly enjoyable turn-based RPG on Nintendo 3DS, merging addictive mechanics with cutesy graphics.
I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed my more than 50 hours with Monster Hunter Stories so far. It effectively eliminates the oh-so-common boring RPG grind, implements a novel turn-based battle system, and sincerely surprises me with seemingly limitless customizability. Though wrapped in a pleasant, sugary coating, Monster Hunter Stories did all of this while retaining the spirit of the Monster Hunter world with some small yet enjoyable nods to fans. I can't wait to dive back into the endgame and hatch myself a Kirin.

Monster Hunter Stories is a decent spin-off, perfect for introducing anyone to the Monster Hunter franchise. The battles may allow for too much gambling and the environments can be unappealing for the eye, but it still features an interesting story that will keep you hooked for dozens of hours.
I wasn't super impressed by Monster Hunter Stories but I don't think the developers intended for it to be a game-changer. It's an above-average RPG infused with some of the cuteness of the Monster Hunter universe, with portability to boot.
Monster Hunter Stories and Stories 2 are coming to new platforms to offer two great classic RPG adventures. The first game improves on a technical level, although it feels aged next to its sequel. There's not too much new content, but if you've never played... This is the best opportunity to do so.

Monster Hunter Stories provides fresh air to the Monster Hunter saga with a formula in which humor, turn-based fighting and raise Monsties are the main components. Might not like to bitter fans, but if you are looking for a casual and fun JRPG or you have never played a Monster Hunter game, you'll love it.

While it's certainly more approachable than your typical Monster Hunter game, Stories fails to capture what has made the series such a hit over the years.
