Path of the Midnight Sun is well worth a look if you're a fan of turn-based JRPGs. If you enjoyed the old Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem games, then there's a high chance that you'll love this.
Path of the Midnight Sun is an excellent, fully-fledged JRPG adventure in its own right.
Let’s be real: JRPGs and JRPG-inspired games are a dime a dozen. It takes something really special to shine. Path of the Midnight Sun does just that. I never thought I’d be sitting here in the first half of the first month of 2023, saying that a game is a GOTY contender. But that’s exactly what I’m doing. It’s in the running because of its intriguing and often surprisingly original story, relatable characters, and solid gameplay. It’s a love letter to classic JRPGs, but also a game that understands the need to stand out on its own.
Path of the Midnight Sun is an indie game full of ambition. While not everything the game tries works so well, you have to appreciate it for trying. With great characters and interesting mechanics, overall I had a good time and I can see this game being someone’s hidden gem favorite.
Neither gameplay style is likely to wow anyone on its own merits, but they are used in good balance to make for an engaging 25-hour experience.
