Playdead, the creator of Limbo and Inside, has signed a publishing deal with Epic Games and has used the news to once again tease its next project. It's been a busy morning for Epic, which also announced it will be publishing the next games from Remedy (Quantum Break, Control) and Gen Design (The Last Guardian).
Playdead has merely teased its next monochromatic presumed platformer with a GIF here and there over the years and did so again today alongside a hiring call to work at the Danish studio. Both Limbo and Inside received heaps of praise during their respective launches and have led to Playdead's unannounced third project being eagerly awaited.
Epic's new deal with Playdead and the other studios gives each studio at least 50% of the profits from the published games, allows them to retain all IP rights, and puts Epic as the sole funder of each project, covering all manner of QA, developer salaries. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, had this to say about the new deals.
We’re building the publishing model we always wanted for ourselves when we worked with publishers. gen DESIGN, Remedy, and Playdead are among the most innovative and talented studios in the industry, with strong visions for their next games,” said Hector Sanchez, Head of Epic Games Publishing. “They will have full creative control, while Epic will provide a solid foundation of project funding and services.”
Epic said to expect more information on these projects and more in the coming months. As for Playdead, there's still no title to go by for its new game, but the spacey images we've seen so far imply players should expect another atmospheric adventure whenever it arrives.
