Critic Reviews for Predator: Hunting Grounds
A predictably grim spin on a legendary action license that really deserves better, Predator: Hunting Grounds is unworthy prey.
Predator: Hunting Grounds offers brief moments of blockbuster action, but ultimately underwhelms more than it excites.
Easily the most authentic Predator game ever made but also a paper-thin multiplayer game that offers far too little content and variety for its asking price.
Hunting Grounds sets the table for thrilling cat-and-mouse battles or embarrassing farces; the quality of each match is ultimately up to players. When everyone's dialed into their roles, it's a lot of fun
Predator: Hunting Grounds' lack of variety and shallow gameplay make it difficult to stick with beyond a handful of rounds.
There is a shell of a good game in Predator: Hunting Grounds, but severe balancing issues, poor console performance, and general clunkiness hold it back from standing shoulder to shoulder with other solid 4v1 multiplayer games—even the one its developer has made before. While its Predator callbacks are solid, for fans looking for another good Predator game, there's not one to be found here. At least not yet.
I'm curious where Predator: Hunting Grounds will go from here given Sony's backing and IllFonic's takeaways from its prior game, Friday the 13th. Despite all the glaring issues, numerous nitpicks, and small scope, I have a real soft spot for this game. The concept deserves to grow and thrive for years.
Much like a real hunt, Predator: Hunting Grounds rewards patience. Wading through the questionable technical performance and perplexing design gives persistent Predators a multiplayer experience that flourishes as its cat-and-mouse gameplay reveals itself like a newly uncloaked Yautja.
