Critic Reviews for SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake showcases vast references from the show but falters due to dull combat.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is a barebones platformer that manages to be supremely boring despite its SpongeBob-infused charm.
Even with these issues, I hope this isn’t the last we see of a Purple Lamp-developed SpongeBob game. The final level alone - with its wonderfully daft premise and unique mechanics - is proof enough that the folks over there have a lot to offer. Even if I’m not quite ready to take Employee of the Month away from Battle for Bikini Bottom, we have the makings of something amazing here. Nickelodeon needs to recognise this potential, and sets its sights higher with the next SpongeBob game.
When The Cosmic Shake is at its best, it sounds, looks, and plays like the kind of game I would have begged my parents to buy me growing up. But when it falters, it’s boring. It’s a game I recommend to fans of SpongeBob SquarePants with ease; for those looking for a great platformer, though, better options lie elsewhere in the sea.
Classic SpongeBob humor combined with solid platforming makes for a fun nostalgia trip through the multiverse in The Cosmic Shake.
Impressive efforts with a few noticeable problems holding them back. Won't astound everyone, but is worth your time and cash.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is a decent 3D platformer filled with all the SpongeBob humour you'd expect, but it feels like a step back when compared to the far more imaginative Battle for Bikini Bottom: Reheydrated. The lack of alternate characters or costume abilities really hurt it, as does the very linear level design, so while there's still fun to be had but I was left with a general feeling of disappointment.
The game shows that not only can Purple Lamb Studios give games the proper remake treatment, they can also follow them up with something refreshingly new, and I can’t wait to see what else the studio cooks up in the future. Especially if it’s another SpongeBob game, because if Cosmic Shake is any indication, Purple Lamb Studios clearly “gets it” concept wise, and are fully able to execute that concept to the fullest.
