SUMMERHOUSE by Friedemann is a visually striking game that offers a serene building experience, perfect for players seeking a creative outlet without stringent gameplay mechanics. While it shines in its ambiance and artistic design, the game could benefit from more refined controls, clearer objectives and enhanced accessibility features. It's a game that won't necessarily consume hours of your time in one sitting, but will be a delightful escape for those who appreciate its laid-back, creative charm.
SUMMERHOUSE is a small building game that isn’t interested in scores, sprawling cities, or complex zoning. It just gives players the tools to create homes using a relatively varied array of parts, with some unlocks. It’s a relaxed approach that makes it equally fun to create weird buildings that cannot exist in the real world or to try and replicate memories of places one really visited during the summer.
Playing SummerHouse, I am reminded that a game doesn’t have to be grand or intricate, nor does it need a deep storyline. In SummerHouse it’s just you with a set of pre-made elements with which you build a house. Or a castle. Or a hotel…or even Bagend. Your imagination is key when you get to work, building the little neighbourhood just like you envision it. No stress, no goals and no time, just your own creativity helped along by a collection of building blocks.
While relaxing and pretty, Summerhouse features no progression and very little content. I've built all there is to build.
As you'd expect, the scale of the game is reflected in the price itself, and you can pick it up for the modest sum of €3.99 - a fair price for what you get in return that could help its developer create more content and updates. Either way, SUMMERHOUSE has a demo in case you want to try it out before a possible purchase. If you fondly remember those long summer days in the country house, this is a simulator that recreates that nostalgic feeling perfectly.

SUMMERHOUSE is a dream game for those who love to build tiny houses with big stories and the freedom to create whatever they want. Beautifully crafted, it's easy to pick up, and made with a lot of love and thought. Being a solo and personal project, the game achieves what it sets out to do. There is no limitation to what you build when using your imagination. Bringing a sense of serenity with its minimalist but thoughtful approach to gaming, it has me wishing for summer to arrive. I would love to see future DLC where players can have more themed blocks to recreate their childhood neighborhoods.
