We haven’t played Total War: Warhammer 3 enough to give it a final score just yet, but this is still a very promising game after 10-hours of play, with the new factions featuring great new mechanics to make every playthrough feel completely different. The story campaign has also seen improvements thanks to the new ‘survival battles’, while it’s also great to see Creative Assembly improve diplomacy and making it less intimidating for newcomers.
The Labo VR Kit looks to be a fantastic extension to Nintendo's cardboard range. This is no Vive or Rift rival, with children being the main focus here, but this is still one of the most inventive and playful takes on virtual reality so far – and importantly, the starter kit is priced very reasonably.
The core of Anthem – being its fearsome gunplay and angelic flight mechanics – are stellar, yet they’re held back by the mission structure that dictates them.
Pro Evolution Soccer remains the best, most accurate representation of football you can play without suddenly realising you can play out from the back like Harry Maguire.
FIFA 19 is a great game, packed with plenty of detail. It isn't a huge step forward in terms of raw gameplay, but the sheer amount of stuff to do will mean you keep coming back for more.
There's no denying Call of Duty is a well put together AAA game. In my first few hours with Call of Duty Black Ops 4, the most consistent aspect was how slick everything feels, exuding quality all over the place like a big ol' quality hose.
I had fun with my first run through Farpoint's single player and the experience in co-op is just as great. Again the blurriness in VR when aiming isn't ideal, but the core gameplay is so satisfying when shooting stuff I tend to overlook it, plus the AIM controller needs to be the new standard controller for any VR FPS games.
Sniper Elite 4 continues to hone and refine the series while also offering an experience more welcoming to newcomers. I'm pleasantly surprised by the campaign's ability to offer a strong balance between sneaky stealth and utter chaos, with both playing styles able to be experienced within the same mission.
Once you get out on the pitch, this is the best game of football ever made. It’s the most technically savvy, intelligent and free-flowing experience I’ve ever had on a digital pitch. I just hope that the online experience – an enormous flaw last year – holds up so that this experience can be excellent across the board.
Everything is so bad in The Quiet Man, from its fumbled central idea and its terrible combat to a plot that ends in a morass of incomprehensible revelations, that it's something of a modern-day curio. The fact it comes from a major studio such as Square Enix, and has clearly had a substantial budget given its models and lighting, makes it all the more bizarre. Somewhere, at some point, there must have been the seed of a good idea. Whatever happened, the result is a tangle of failures that is best remembered as a bad dream.
The game has a gooey smooth outer coating that contains a rough, unpleasant centre. Unfortunately, Black Clover Quartet Knights is much like Asta himself; completely lacking in magic.
Agony. It's a pretty fitting name.
There's always a temptation to cut indie studios some slack. Clearly, Past Cure has a much lower budget than most action games, and it's refreshing that the team didn't use crowdfunding to get their project off the ground.
Horrendous dialogue, overly simplistic controls and mechanics make for a terrible adventure for Brog and his Barbarians. Although it’s admirable to make a simplistic RTS, doing so completely strips any ability for the player to overcome the unfair odds that the game presents as soon as the tutorials come to an abrupt end.
Ghostbusters has a vaguely half-decent core, but stretches it too far over interminable levels wrecked by mindless repetition and a lack of strong ideas. It’s dull played solo, tedious in multi-player and generally no fun whatever you do. The new movie has its lovers and its haters, but the game will create no such divisions. Whoever you are, whatever you like, it’s just no good.
Umbrella Corps is a laughably broken mess, unworthy of the iconic franchise it inhabits. The small echoes of nostalgic beauty are negated by its repetitive gameplay, awful mechanics and complete lack of worthwhile content.
You can see the potential in Rodea's high-flying, swooping, soaring gameplay, but it's all squandered by the woeful visuals, poor design and terrible controls. The Wii U might be short of quality games this winter but you'd have to be pretty desperate to buy this.
With ropy graphics, repetitive gameplay and wretched controls, Godzilla is so bad that it's almost lovable. You get a lot of classic kaiju to play with, and smashing them through the sights of Tokyo can be strangely entertaining. Sadly, it's not entertaining enough to warrant paying out for a full-price game.
I wouldn't recommend Iron Rain over Earth Defense Force 5, since it fails to deliver the distilled, charming experience I adore from the Sandlot series.
Even with all of the impressive enhancements, Borderlands: GOTY Edition still leaves much to be desired. The genre has moved on so much in the past decade that it's hard to recommend this to anyone but true believers.
